Jessica McAvoy is an emerging artist who lives and works on Long Island. This exhibition displays a collection of bold charcoal drawings that reveals the artist’s interest in an expressive approach to form and space. Her compositions make direct reference to paintings by Spanish artist, Francisco Goya, although she alters the imagery by introducing the form of the rooster. The portrayal of fowl in these dark emotive drawings conveys an absurdity that speaks to McAvoy’s sensibility.

The Patchogue Arts Council presents "Assemblages" by Clayton Orehek

The Lobby Art Gallery at the Patchogue Theater for the Performing Arts 71 East Main Street, Patchogue NY 11772. The gallery will be open during theater performances only. March 22 - May 5, 2010.

An artist's reception will be held April 15th 6:30-9:00 pm.

Clayton Orehek has worked commercially in neon lighting for nearly 20 years. During that time he has also applied his craft to more personal creative works. His artwork ranges from wall hangings to large-scale multi-media installations which function as social/cultural commentary. A collector of found objects, Orehek has formed a pallet of detritus which he draws from to create assemblages of glass, metal, ceramic, etc. These materials are cultural markers, indicators of what the culture that made them deemed valuable. The juxtaposition of material and symbolism expresses the artist's interest in aesthetic and conceptual isssues.This exhibition includes five mixed media wall pieces by Clayton Orehek.

"The Tonal and The Nagual" by artist Laurence Lee

The sculpture exhibit entitled "The Tonal and The Nagual" by artist Laurence Lee is running through December 17. It is located in the Lobby of the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts and can be viewed every day from noon to 6 PM.Creating works in both wood and metal, Mr. Lee developed his skills working in a fine arts foundry and through the tutelage of a number of masters in his chosen crafts. Lee's rationale for his art includes ideas gleaned from Jungian philosophy and Non-western mysticism.

Janell O'Rourke "Nature Spirits" Exhibition

Wednesday, August 19 at 6:30 an artist reception for Janell O'Rourke "Nature Spirits" was held at the Patchogue Theater Lobby.

Ms. O’Rourke’s recent work is an intimate portrayal of animals. The spirit of each subject is expressed within an abstraction of their environment or as caught as a moment in time. The artist finds inspiration for her works through current events, books and films.

Ms. O’Rourke has successfully exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions throughout the U.S. She is currently exhibiting at Kentler International Drawing Space, the show entitled “Degrees of Density” will travel to the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock. Janell is creating illustrations for a book of essays entitled “Paul Bunyan Lives, and Other News from the Natural World” and a book of poetry, “Robin’s Egg Blue,” by Thomas Saya. She is also working on a video and sound installation entitled “Caged Lives Fractured,” in collaboration with Vincent J. Evans. As an artist who lives and works in Queens NY, Ms O’Rourke is a recent recipient of the Individual Artist Initiative awarded by the Queens Council on the Arts.

The Lobby Gallery will feature her work until September 24. More of Ms. O'Rourke's work can be seen at the up-coming Patchogue Arts Biennial, October 3rd - 24th, she will be one of the 44 artists exhibiting at 225 W. Main Street, Patchogue in Briarcliffe College’s 12,000 sq. ft. exhibition hall.

Jason Paradis "Face North" Exhibit

Artist Reception at the Patchogue Theatre Lobby Gallery for Jason Paradis's, mixed media drawing exhibit is named “Face north” and will be up for viewing May 29 - July 24. A reception for the artist was be held on Thursday, June 11 at 6:30 pm. Continuing a tradition of combining local arts and dining, the reception will be catered by Patchogue’s own ‘Once and For All’. Paradis contemplates some of the great mysteries of existence, the nature of time, the relationship of past, present, and future, the extent of the universe, its vastness and that which is in our immediate vicinity but beyond our perception. He has developed a visual language while contemplating the night skies of Northern Canada in extensive camping trips throughout his life. The mingling of memories of the past with current experience and anticipation of the future, the juxtaposition of intimacy and vastness has led to a layered approach in both the meaning and implementation of his work.

Paradis’ work has been exhibited internationally and throughout the US. Closer to home he has shown in numerous galleries throughout Long Island and the metropolitan area including White Columns in NYC, the Omni Gallery, Uniondale and the Staller Center for the Performing Arts in Stony Brook. His solo exhibitions include “Small Works” at the Islip Art Museum in 2006

Born in Ontario, Canada Jason now lives in Glenwood Landing, NY. He received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree from Queen’s University, Ontario. He earned a Master’s of Fine Arts Degree in 1998 from Stony Brook where he is currently on the faculty teaching drawing and painting.

The “Patchogue Theatre Art Gallery” has a dual mission to introduce the public to art of distinct vision and to promote regional artists of professional caliber. A committee will select 3 artists per year to have a solo exhibition in the Lobby Gallery.

Exhibit: Ceramic Platters by Bill Shillalies

The ceramic platters of Bill Shillalies will be exhibited in the Patchogue Theater Lobby Art Gallery between January 23 and March15. Mr. Shillalies work combines tradition and experimentation. Beginning with the potters wheel he throws large platter forms often reaching a diameter of 36 inches. The forms are treated with a variety of glazes drawn from years of experimentation. During the firing process the glazes are affected by the tremendous temperatures of the kiln and respond in a predictable but not a controllable manner. Mr. Shillalies updates the ancient tradition of Japanese pottery in which the natural processes occurring in the kiln complete the piece. He cites as influences the natural forces of our Earth, climatic and geological which are represented in both the process and the finished piece.

Mr. Shillialies grew up in southern New Jersey and Germany. He received BA from Northland College in Wisconsin and an MA from Adelphi University. In 1991 he earned an MFA from Hunter College studying under Susan Peterson. He has studied and worked with Peter Voulkos, a seminal figure in the development of ceramic sculpture and Peter Callas during which time he developed an appreciation for the Japanese firing method known as Anagama.

Mr. Shillalies teaches ceramics and sculpture at Adelphi University and Nassau Community College. He gives workshops in a variety of ceramic techniques throughout the Tri State area. His work has been exhibited throughout the US as well as internationally and is represented in a number of private collection. Since 2000 he has been represented by the Dai Ichi Gallery in New York City.

The Patchogue Arts Council is excited to announce its latest exhibition to grace the walls of the Patchogue Theater for Performing Arts. “LACE MILL: Images and Artifacts”, featuring the photography of local Long Island artist Leonardo Liguori will be on view from November 26th – January 20th 2009, during Theater and box office hours.

Leonardo Liguori “From the moment I first breached the outer-protective walls of the complex known as the Lace Mill, I was enthralled by her mystery, her shadows, sounds and even her smells. With and without assistants and models, I crawled, climbed, jumped and dangled through, over, under, around and in between her countless catacombs, broken stairwells, busted walls, river-strewn floors, and skeleton roofs.”

Please join us for a special reception, Oct. 23, 6:30- 8:30 Artist, Dawn Lee has lived and worked on Long Island since 1990. She is from Colorado where she received her BFA in printmaking, and moved to Brooklyn, New York to study painting at Pratt Institute of Art. Later she received her MFA in painting from Long Island University. Her paintings, prints, and drawings are inspired by nature, the latest of which focus on the shores of rivers on Long Island. They have been exhibited nationally and throughout the New York area. Ms. Lee is also an art professor at St. Joseph's College in Patchogue, an art curator, and director of the Omni Gallery in Uniondale, NY."
